Sure, it may be cliche to have a haunting piano playing in the background while a female singer calls out in the aural night, lamenting a failed relationship. But sometimes it’s not about reinventing the wheel: it’s about the execution. And here Christina gives a tour-de-force vocal performance, possibly the best of any recorded track in her entire discography. Powerful but controlled. Heart-breaking but chill-inducing. Measured but emotional. I will never get tired of her soaring, unparalleled voice during the chorus, where she’s “tired of walking on eggshells, so terrified to fail” and yet ultimately “stronger than ever”.
It’s the nose scrunch at the end that does it for me.
